So whether you're looking for an action-packed adventure or a relaxing and romantic getaway, an Okavango Delta Safari is the perfect choice for those interested in travelling to Botswana.
The Okavango Delta is a massive inland delta in Botswana. It is one of the world's largest inland deltas and one of Southern Africa's top safari destinations. An Okavango Safari is a great way to see this amazing natural wonder and its exceptional wildlife and birdlife. You can explore the Delta on foot, a game viewing 4x4 safari vehicle, or via boat trips and mokoro trips (traditional canoe). There are many different safari options and types to choose from, and we can help you find the perfect one for you.

When is the best time to go on a safari in the Okavango Delta?
The best time to go on an Okavango safari is during the dry season (winter in the southern hemisphere), from April to October. Wildlife sightings are excellent during this time, and as a bonus, the Delta is in full flood season. This is peak season, and this is seen in the prices of all packages.
The hot, wet summer months are regarded as the "green season", with good game viewing sightings and excellent birdlife, all at lower prices.
Winter is the best if heat is something you cannot handle; Botswana and the Kalahari Desert can get very hot. We have been on numerous summer safaris where temperatures went past 45 degrees celsius.
The prices of both safari and lodges will differ entirely between the green season and peak season; the difference between the two seasons can be eye-watering.
How to get to the Okavango Delta?
There are a few ways to get to and into the Okavango Delta.
As a general rule of thumb, the small town of Maun is the gateway into the Delta. Getting to Maun is as easy as jumping on a flight from South Africa (Johannesburg and Cape Town), Zambia, Victoria Falls or Namibia. By road, Maun is usually a few days' drive from the countries mentioned above; remember, this is Africa, and night driving is a big - no-no. As a side note, driving from Cape Town will take you at least three full days, so instead, look at flying.
From Maun, there are two options with regards to getting to your destinations within the Okavango;
- Chartered aircraft offer the quicker but more expensive option
- -- Bonus, viewing the Delta from the air is spectacular
- Road transfers are longer in terms of driving time but come in slightly cheaper
- -- Bonus, one gets more of a safari and cultural experience over a few hours in the 4x4 vehicle
- Some lodges, camps and destinations can only be accessed via light aircraft
No one method is better than the other; it all depends on what you are looking for, what's important and if a budget comes into play. We also offer a host of overland tours, although none are listed here (please see our Botswana safari page, under budget options).
What To See And Do On An Okavango Delta Safari?
The Okavango Delta is one of Africa's top destinations for a reason – it is home to some of the continent's most exceptional wildlife sightings and unique habitats.
Expect exceptional game viewing sightings, crystal clear waters, remote and wild islands, Bushmen and Tswana communities and some of the best game viewing activities available; helicopter and light aircraft flights, boat trips, canoeing expeditions, land-based 4x4 game drives, walking safaris, sunset cruises and not forgetting fishing tours.
Should one desire, a few of the lodges and camps within our portfolio offer guests spa and wellness treatments in to die for locations. As a side note, an optional visit to the incredible Victoria Falls on either the Zambian or Zimbabwean side is available.
What wildlife can be spotted on a safari in the Okavango Delta?
The Okavango Delta is an excellent destination for game viewing. You can see elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, Cape buffalos, Nile crocodiles and many other plains game species, some only found in the delta, all within their natural habitat. The Region is also home to many bird species, great for birdwatching, particularly in the summer months.
