Introduction

Kalahari Plains Camp is situated in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and offers some of the best summer wildlife viewing opportunities in Africa.

Located in the Kalahari Desert biome in the central part of Botswana, this reserve is the largest conservation area in this country and at 5 million hectares (12 million acres), one of the largest in the world.

Kalahari Plains Camp is easily combined with the Okavango Delta and Linyanti regions to provide a comprehensive Botswana experience - and in summer, it is simply unbeatable as a wildlife destination.

Rooms and Suites

Kalahari Plains Camp is beautifully situated close to the famous Deception Valley and comprises six Meru-style en-suite tents with a central area with lounge, dining area and central bar.

The tents and main area are all raised a metre off the ground to catch the breeze and take in the sweeping spacious view across the Kalahari. A rooftop deck for those star beds under the Kalahari night skies.

Solar power provides electricity and hot water, and the innovative insulated canvas walls and roof keep the temperatures inside comfortable.

Safari Activities

During the summer months (November through to end of April) the northern part of the CKGR offers some of the best wildlife viewings in Botswana: The abundance of herbivores and their prey is perfectly complemented by lush green landscapes, floral displays and beautiful skies. At this time of year, these verdant flatlands are alive with aggregations of gemsbok, springbok and blue wildebeest, followed in turn by high predator concentrations.

At other times, the Kalahari is more typically a desert-type system: warm and dry. Game viewing remains productive and moves into the vegetated dunal belt and pan systems surrounding the valleys. The general plains game easily seen include gemsbok, springbok, red hartebeest, honey badger, grey duiker and steenbok. Some 220 bird species have been recorded to date.

Guided game drives from Kalahari Plains Camp unlock the fascinating wildlife treasures found in this beautiful area, with excellent cheetah viewing a regular feature. San Bushman experiences provide insights into the unique culture of these fascinating people.
