Pelo Is A Rustic and Remote Safari Camp Deep In Botswana's Okavango Delta
Pelo Camp on a small remote island deep in Botswana's famed Okavango Delta offers guests a remote, wild, action-packed and eco-friendly safari all at a very reasonable price point. The rustic and remote safari camp is perfect for adventurous travellers seeking that classic Okavango experience.
The camp is located in the Jao Concession on the border of the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, an area that is rich not only in wildlife but also in birdlife - game viewing around Pelo is nothing short of exceptional.
Please note; that Pelo Camp is only open between the 1st of March and the 30th of November each year.
Our recommendation with Pelo Camp is to combine this water-based camp with a few nights at a safari camp or lodge in the Okavango Delta that offers more land-based safaris activities; that way, one gets the best of both worlds.
Pelo Camp is located in a remote and pristine area of the Okavango Delta. The best way to get to Pelo Camp is by flying into Maun Airport and then taking a light aircraft flight to Xakanaxa Airstrip.
The flight from Maun Airport to Xakanaxa Airstrip takes approximately 30 minutes. From Xakanaxa Airstrip, you will then need to take a boat transfer to Pelo Camp. The boat transfer from Xakanaxa Airstrip to Pelo Camp takes approximately 45 minutes - game viewing almost all the way.
Rooms and Suites
Five beautiful and intimate guest tents await all that stay at Pelo Camp.
Each of the guest tents at Pelo offers up a spacious bedroom area with a small lounge and writing desk, en-suite bathrooms with both indoor and outdoor showers (bucket shower), and a covered front veranda with fantastic views of the surrounding wetlands.
- 4 x twin-bedded Meru-styled guest tents, each with two three-quarter beds
- 1 x double Meru-styled safari tent with a king-size bed
Cuisine and Wine
The cuisine at Pelo Camp is unpretentious yet really good, all in the same breath. All meals are served either in the communal dining tent or outside in the traditional boma area.
Private dinners at Pelo can be arranged for those special occasions when staying at Pelo (please advise us beforehand).
The food is healthy and nutritious, made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
The wine list comprises of a selection of South African wines that have been carefully chosen to complement all cuisine when at Pelo.
Please advise Pelo Camp or us beforehand should you have any special dietary requests.
Accommodation Facilities
The central guest at Pelo Camp area comprises two large tented areas, one the lounge tent with leather couches and your typical safari style decor. The other is the indoor dining area with a large dining table for those delicious meals during the day.
In front of these two tented structures is a wooden viewing deck with views that will amaze, especially at sunset. Pelo Camp is a classic tented camp all round with just the right amount of amenities.
A small camp swimming pool (plunge pool if you like) is found just in front of the central guest area; the views from here are outstanding.
Wildlife Activities
The wildlife at Pelo camp is truly amazing. Guests will hopefully get to see elephants, lions, leopards, Cape buffalo, red lechwe and numerous other antelope and plains game.
Safari activities around Pelo are water-based, either in mekoro's or motorboats; there is nothing quite like viewing Botswana's wildlife, birdlife, insects, reptiles, amphibians and flora from the waters of the Okavango Delta.
Guided nature walks are on offer but need to be pre-booked to secure a guide.
Fishing on a catch and release basis is a must; Pelo Camp offers guests a small stock of basic rods and reels for use (no fly-fishing equipment is available, you will have to bring your own).
Note: Game drives are not offered at Pelo due to location (there are no roads or any way of getting vehicles to the camp).
Should you be interested in a wildlife viewing by a helicopter flight over the surrounding Okavango waterways is an optional extra, highly recommended by us at Uyaphi.com. Please note that this activity does need to be booked before arriving at Pelo.
Birding around Pelo Camp is exceptional and with a bit of luck, one might just spot a Pel's Fishing Owl or Wattled Crane.
Family Friendly
Pelo Camp welcomes children aged 13 years and older.
However, there are no specific facilities or activities for children.
So if you're looking for a family-friendly option for younger children, Pelo Camp may not be the best option.
