Experience The Best Wildlife Sightings At Plains Camp In The Olare Motorogi Mara Conservancy
Mara Plains Camp, a one-of-a-kind safari camp located in a small forest within the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy, is located just north of the Masai Mara National Reserve. A private and intimate camp that offers guests the very best in wildlife sightings, service, guiding, accommodation and cuisine.
Being one of only three Relais & Chateaux establishments in Kenya, Mara Plains offers guests the ultimate luxury while paying homage to that classic tented safari that Kenya is so famous for.
Mara Plains by the team at Great Plains Conservation is also known for its fantastic staff and guides, who provide guests with an unsurpassed level of service and knowledge about the area and its wildlife and bird species.
Additionally, the luxurious tented suites offer guests a unique and comfortable safari experience, while the delicious cuisine and bush picnics only add to the amazing Mara Plains Camp experience.
This is the camp for you for those seeking a safari in the Masai Mara, far away from humanity and mass tourism. The magnificent Mara Plains Camp offers guests access to almost 100 000 acres of the private conservancy (traversing area) for game drives and the great migration.
Rooms and Suites
With only five luxurious tented suites, accommodating a maximum of ten guests at any one time, Mara Plains Camp offers guests the ultimate privacy and exclusivity when staying in the Mara region of Kenya.
With canvas ceilings, wooden flooring, and only the finest in furnishings, these 700 sq. foot tented suites have to be seen to be believed. All aspects of these suites pay homage to East Africa’s rich safari history.
The suites are all open plan by their very design; king-sized beds, a small lounge area, a writing desk, a verandah, a large copper bathtub and an indoor shower come together to form one mighty impression from start to finish.
One of the best, if not the best, Masai Mara lodges for those seeking out only the best; very few can compete with this camp.
Cuisine and Wine
As with all Great Plains Conservation properties in Arica, fine dining is part and parcel of one's stay, and Mara Plains Camp is undoubtedly no different. Whether it be breakfast, lunch, high tea or dinner, the chef and their team in the kitchen will simply wow you, no matter the time of day.
The timing of your meals is flexible and, most of the time, entirely up to you as to when you are ready to eat. Exquisite breakfast picnics surrounded by pristine bushveld and wildlife whilst out on a game drive are sure to be a highlight.
For those special occasions, private dinners can be arranged in a romantic location around the camp.
Most dietary requests can be catered for with advance notice.
Facilities
The tented central guest area offers guests a luxuriously appointed lounge area, a small library, a dining room and a bar area.
The guest area is the social hub of Mara Plains Camp; it is where one gathers before and after the safari activities, before and after meals and where one can access the small boutique curio shop.
Outdoors a wooden and rope bridge leads to and from the camp, and an outdoor dining area and a firepit are where one can enjoy the sounds of the surrounding bushveld while enjoying fine wine and cuisine.
Activities
Safari activities from Mara Plains are mainly centred around game drives and the magnificent wildlife and birdlife of the Olare Motorogi Conservancy on the Masai Mara National Reserve’s northern boundary.
No other safari camp comes even close in terms of traversing rights as to what Mara Plains Camp offers, and that is access to just under 100 000 acres of private conservancy teaming with wildlife year-round. A great destination for those interested in witnessing the wildebeest migration.
Night drives in the Olare Motorogi offer guests the chance to spot those elusive nocturnal mammals, including; leopard, lion and hyena sightings.
For those interested in Maasai culture, a highlight is a visit to a local village and school. This option is particularly popular with families.
Hot air balloon safaris are available at an extra cost; however, one needs to book this activity before arrival. In our humble opinion, a hot air balloon safari is a must when in the Mara region.
Child Friendly
Mara Plains welcomes families with children eight years and older with suitable accommodation, meal options, and safari activities. A kid’s safari program allows the little ones to experience and explore all that surrounds them in a safe and supervised manner.
As the camp is unfenced, wildlife can and will meander through at any time of the day or night. Children will need to be supervised at all times.
In Conclusion
Mara Plains Camp by Great Plains Conservation is the perfect East African safari camp for those seeking a more private and exclusive experience in the Masai Mara. With only five luxurious tented suites, accommodating a maximum of ten guests at any one time, this camp offers guests unparalleled privacy, all with en-suite facilities like few others can match.
The cuisine and wine options are nothing short of exceptional, as is to be expected from a Relais & Chateaux property.
The camp facilities include an outdoor dining area, fire pit, and wooden bridge that leads to the camp.
Game viewing activities available include game drives, night drives, wildebeest migration, visits to local Maasai villages, and hot air balloon safaris (which should be booked in advance).
All in all, Mara Plains Camp is an amazing safari camp that comes highly recommended for those looking for only the best in safari experiences in East Africa!

It was one of those rare moments where you take in the majesty of nature in complete silence, disturbing nothing, saying nothing. In Kenya last month, I had the great pleasure of a balloon safari over the Masai Mara organised by the excellent and highly professional Governors Company.Giraffe Manor Review
Located in the southern suburbs of Nairobi is an English manor house. When it was built, the country was unclaimed bush rampant with African wildlife. The home of Karen Blixen is nearby who posthumously lends her name to this suburb, Karen.Hells Gate Kenya
I had visions of being trampled by buffalo, stalked by lions, or, given the extreme humidity and daytime temperatures, falling prey to one of the thousands of vultures who call Hell's Gate National Park their home. But our guide assured me that it would be fun.
