Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge In The Tsavo Is The Perfect Safari Experience At A Great Price
Located on a ridge that commands magnificent sweeping views of the Chyulu Hills at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilaguni was the first safari lodge ever to be built in a national park and has long been a favourite of international tourists. It was opened in 1962 and has been under Serena's management since December 1999.
Taking its name from a Kamba word meaning 'young rhino', this Tsavo Safari Lodge is located in the middle of the world-renowned Tsavo National Park - an area covering 20,720 square kilometres that boast a huge population of elephants.
Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge is one of the more popular lodges due to its safari experience versus price comparison.
Rooms and Suites
Cool, tranquil and hushed for optimum game-viewing, the open-air dining area, timbered decks, and rock-hewn bar blend the traditional "khaki-and-canvas" look with bright-painted banners, sepia-hued paintings and evocative olive-wood carvings of elephant herds and tail-erect warthogs.
The elegantly renovated rooms draw on a sun-gold, sky-blue and bush-green savannah colour palette. They have been so styled to provide world-class luxury and a quintessential African aura whilst featuring private verandas with views of eternity.
Cuisine and Wine
The traditionally thatched, the breeze-cooled dining room overlooks the Lodge's action-packed water hole where lumbering herds of elephant, roving buffalo and playful zebra collect to drink whilst the guest menu features a sensitive blend of ethnic cuisine, internationally-themed dishes and traditional safari favourites.
The wine and beer selection at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge is varied and extensive. There are a number of international wines from regions all over the world, as well as a good selection of Kenyan and African beers. The lodge has something to offer everyone, whether you're looking for a classic red or white wine or something more adventurous like an African craft beer.
Facilities
At the end of an action-packed day, guests can also enjoy a dip in the calm, blue waters of a rock-paved swimming pool set amongst the lush foliage of an extensively planted tropical garden.
The viewing terrace offers up wildlife sightings at the watering hole and vistas that stretch the Chyulu Hills.
Activities
The safari activities at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge include game drives, excursions to Mzima Springs, and visits to The Rhino Sanctuary. Guests can also explore Chaimu Lava Floor, Sheitani Lava, and Roaring Rocks.

I had visions of being trampled by buffalo, stalked by lions, or, given the extreme humidity and daytime temperatures, falling prey to one of the thousands of vultures who call Hell's Gate National Park their home. But our guide assured me that it would be fun.
