Chapman's Peak Drive
Driving on Chapman's Peak Drive here in Hout Bay is best done slowly, this way one gets to appreciate the surrounding vistas. Yes, this drive is one spectacular bit of engineering, the way the road rises from sea level to the way it cuts into the mountain side - simply amazing and breath taking.
In 1915 work began on constructing the road connecting Hout Bay and Noordhoek and was finally completed in 1922, in 1962 the road itself was widened to the double lane we know today.
Whether you are tackling this road from the Noordhoek side or the Hout Bay side be sure to use the many lookout points along the route, remember the road is narrow with 200m + drop offs to the side - be careful.
We have found that stopping off at a shop to buy a bottle of wine, cheese, biscuits and biltong on the way to Chapman's Peak Cape Town offers up the best sunsets that one could possibly find.
- Pros; The stunning views out over Hout Bay, Sunsets, Ocean on one side and Mountain on the other.
- Cons; Busy over summer, When the road is closed.
