A Guest House Experience With Insight Into The History Of The Anglo-Zulu War At Fugitives Drift
The original, old farmhouse is the setting for your stay in the KwaZulu Natal Battlefields region of South Africa. It is from here that tours of the nearby battlefields depart daily for both the Batlle of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift.
The Rattray family-owned Fugitives Drift Guest House is situated in the 2500 hectare Fugitive's Drift Nature Reserve (natural heritage site), just 8 kilometres from the battlefield of Rorke's Drift.
Fugitive's Drift and Uyaphi.com have had a relationship for two decades, a relationship that includes hundreds of clients that have all walked away at the end of their stay with a renewed sense of history and having enjoyed genuine South African hospitality.
The spectacular Fugitive's Drift property offers guests historic Battlefields, activities on which one can view abundant game, horseback safaris, fishing, mountain biking, and nature walks.
As the pioneering family in "Heritage Tourism", the David Rattray family offers up an experience like very few others in the industry can.
This is not a one-night stay destination; we would highly recommend that one look at a minimum of three nights to take in all that is offered.
Fugitives Drift Guest House is famed for some of the finest guides and storytellers; a day out as a history lesson turns into one of the great stories of our times.
Fugitives' Drift Lodge is the more luxurious option should one be interested.
Rooms And Suites
Six large en-suite bedrooms individually decorated with private verandahs offer visitors views out over the surrounding gardens, distant battlefields and bushveld.
All rooms offer up en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning and king-sized beds (or two 3/4 beds should you be sharing with a friend).
Furnishings are more of a rustic nature while still offering up a luxury feel.
We have never felt that one needs more luxury when staying here, and to be 100% honest, most people staying here will feel the same way. We simply love the intimate nature of what Fugitives Drift Guest House offers, with everything amenity within a few steps away.
Cuisine And Wine
Breakfasts and lunches are a flavoursome affair either hosted in the indoor dining room or outside on the verandah - weather dependant.
If one is participating in a full-day Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift tour of the surrounding battlefields, a picnic lunch is catered for.
At nightfall, under a canopy of stars, gather around the fire in a boma area in front of the central lodge area, where traditional country cooking is offered in a charming country setting.
Fugitives Drift Guest House offers guests superb country-styled cuisine and personal service are a feature of this outstanding establishment.
Facilities
Boasting a large swimming pool for escape from those hot KwaZulu Natal summers, the sparkling pool has views out over Isandlwana Battlefield and surrounding bushveld.
A covered verandah surrounds the main guest area at Fugitives Drift Guest House, again with views of all that surround it.
Inside, one has access to a lounge area with a small library and open fireplace, as well as an adjoining indoor diner area.

uShaka Marine World Durban
Some of the most beautiful game reserves in South Africa are located in Kwazulu Natal, within a few hours' drive of the airport.
Coupled with the Drakensberg Mountain range and the tropical Indian Ocean coast, you have a pretty impressive list of sights to see and experience.
When it comes to Durban however, people have mostly avoided the city as of no particular interest for the family. Think again.
Fugitives Drift Review
David Rattray is synonymous with Fugitives Drift. His love and hard work put this obscure corner of Zululand on the world map.
Initially, he pioneered the new tourism sector of historical tours in South Africa and then by attracting the great and good of this world including several members of the British Royal Family to this area who consequently were important in financing the influential David Rattray Foundation.
Comrades Marathon
After the Two Oceans and continuing our theme of running, on the 1st of June is the mother of all ultramarathon running in South Africa and the world, The Comrades Marathon.
This is a race of some pedigree and not only is it the oldest with it having begun in 1921 but it is also by far the largest with an average of 12000 runners competing annually.
Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift Battlefields
There are few other places on earth where you can visit a battlefield area and see exactly what the soldiers of 130 years ago observed.
The now-famous battles of Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana Battlefields are two of those places and the fact that they are located in the vast and unspoilt beauty of Zululand adds to their allure.
