A 7 Day Hiking Experience To The Summit Of Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro Along The Marangu Route
The Marangu Route is the quickest and most straightforward route (and one of the most popular) to reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, sitting at 5895 meters above sea level.
One of the few routes on Kilimanjaro that provides solar-powered sleeping huts with comfortable bedding at each of the camps. Every hut is shared, and each bunk has a sponge mattress and cushion. There are 60 bunks at Mandara and Kibo Huts and 120 at Horombo Hut. At the two lower huts, bathrooms and running water are accessible. The final camp has essential men's and ladies' toilets.
Climbers from numerous countries gather for meals in the dining facilities at each camp, forming a fun and energetic ambience.
This route is generally completed in 5 days, but we've chosen to do it in 6 days to acclimatize better for this itinerary.
If you love hiking and trekking and are in good shape, then getting to the top of Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro is an adventure you won't want to miss! Enjoy the breathtaking views from the summit of Africa's highest mountain. If you're looking for an unforgettable experience, Mt. Kilimanjaro Safaris are it!
Day 1: Moshi, Kilimanjaro
- Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and meet a travel representative before being transferred to our hotel in Moshi.
- All of the necessities for a pleasant stay will be available at the Aishi Machame Hotel, including clean rooms, hot water showers, courteous service, a swimming pool, and an Internet connection.
- In the evening, we will have a briefing with our Kilimanjaro hiking guides, who will provide us with useful information about our forthcoming excursion and ensure that we are prepared to begin our Kilimanjaro trek.
- Meals: Bed and breakfast
- Accommodation: Aishi Machame Hotel
Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
- Our guide and support crew will arrive at the hotel in the early morning for one last quick briefing and equipment check, after which we transfer by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park's, Marangu Gate (1,860 m).
- The expedition will then begin trekking up to Mandara Hut (2,700 m), after the quick procedure of receiving climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service.
- Because the trekking path passes through rainforests (where tropical showers are certain), we recommend bringing not just extra clothes, but also a waterproof jacket.
- When we reach camp, the support crew will prepare lunch and dinner.
- You will be spending your nights in Alpine style dormitory huts throughout the Marangu trek.
- Change in Elevation: Marangu Gate (1,860 m) -> Mandara Hut (2,700 m)
- Hiking distance: 11 km
- Hiking time: 5-7 hours
- Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
- We depart Mandara Hut in the early morning to begin a moderate walk towards Horombo Hut, which is located at an altitude of 3,720 meters.
- Two volcanoes (Kibo and Mawenzi) can be seen from our camp tonight.
- We will go on an acclimatization trek in the direction of Kibo Hut with a 200-meter ascent and then descend back to Horombo Hut for dinner and an early night.
- NOTE: Take the acclimatization walks very seriously. They boost your chances of reaching the top of Kilimanjaro and avoid the risks associated with high-altitude sickness.
- Change in Elevation: Mandara Hut (2,700 m) -> Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
- Hiking distance: 10 km
- Hiking time: 5-6 hours
- Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
- We'll depart our base camp this morning, after breakfast, on our way to the Kibo Hut (4,700 m).
- The trekking is straightforward and won't take long, just remember to keep up a reasonable speed to stay healthy for the climb to Kilimanjaro's peak.
- We should arrive at camp in time for lunch, after which we advise you to rest as much as possible, avoid any strenuous activity, and drink plenty of water.
- Change in Elevation: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) -> Kibo Hut (4,700 m)
- Hiking distance: 10 km
- Hiking time: 4-8 hours
- Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
- A very early departure from Kibo Hut (4,700 m) sees us start trekking to Kilimanjaro's summit, Uhuru peak (5,895 m).
- Because of the terrain, the trek will be moderate from a physical standpoint, but the altitude poses an enormous hazard.
- Each pair of climbers will be accompanied by their own guide for the duration of the trek, who will be monitoring your stamina and mental fortitude.
- We return to Kibo Camp after our successful climb to Uhuru Peak, take two hours off, and continue our descent to Horombo Hut (3,720 m).
- Change in Elevation: Kibo Hut (4,700 m) -> Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) -> Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
- Hiking distance: 16 km
- Hiking time: 9-12 hours
- Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
- After a hot breakfast, we will depart for the Kilimanjaro National Park's Marangu Gate (1,860 m).
- Congratulation is in order for yourself and the group, do not forget to share your experiences in the guestbook at the gate.
- Commemorative certificates are awarded and then a transfer back to the Aishi Machame Hotel.
- Change in Elevation: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) -> Marangu Gate (1,860 m)
- Hiking distance: 18 km
- Hiking time: 5-6 hours
- Accommodation: Aishi Machame Hotel
Day 7: Safari Ends
- After a good night's sleep, a transfer awaits for the Kilimanjaro airport (should a dayroom be required, this can be arranged and paid directly at the hotel).
If you're looking for an unforgettable experience, look no further than the 7-day Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route. This hiking itinerary has included an extra day on the mountain slopes for one to better acclimatize to the altitudes.
